“Amandla” means power in isiZulu and isiXhosa.

Energy poverty response · Gauteng and beyond

Know when a community’s power fails — and act before the dark does.

Solar sensors, battery readings, load data and community photos go in. Plain-language alerts in local languages, reviewed work orders and dashboards for municipalities and traditional authorities come out.

This solution requires current AI models to operate.

Why

Energy poverty hits health, livelihoods and dignity: dead phones, spoiled food, dark clinics, unsafe candles and paraffin.

Household

Small solar kits, charging points, fridges.

Community

Halls, clinics, schools, street lighting.

Network

Grid-tied feeders, illegal-connection overload, outages.

Amandla Watch is decision support only. Responsibility stays with the humans and authorities who approve action.

How it works

  1. Ingest sensor data
  2. Score anomalies at the edge
  3. Explain in plain language
  4. Find patterns across sites
  5. Verify with photos
  6. Visualise on the map
  7. Human decides

AI helpers

This solution requires current AI models to operate; the models listed (or their current equivalents) are essential to the production system. Model names are candidates under evaluation, not endorsements, and must be checked against provider documentation. Cost ranges are planning estimates.

How this model works. The home runs on sunlight caught by the solar panel. The panel fills the battery, and the battery powers lights, a fridge and phones. A small sensor on a pole watches the battery all day. When the battery gets stressed, the sensor tells the system, and the alert phone changes from OK to WARNING to ALERT. A person then decides what to do, and a technician walks over to fix it. Move the slider to see it happen.

Legend: green LED = healthy, amber = watch, red = fault with smoke and red glow. Pilot test model, not a measurement.

Impact

Amberleigh Keelynne Rae, Director

Households

Earlier warning when kits or batteries fail.

Clinics and schools

Backup power checked before it is needed.

Municipalities

One prioritised queue of reviewed work.

Traditional authorities

Clear summaries in the languages people speak.

Why we think it can work: utilities already rely on human-approved fault dispatch; we add earlier detection and local-language communication.
Pilot scope: impact claims are design intent. We will publish measured results (response time, outage hours, alerts acknowledged) only once collected. No impact figures are claimed here.

Evidence

Reports on failing basic services in Gauteng and Limpopo show the pattern we address: infrastructure failure, slow response and little visibility in informal settlements. These sources concern water and are context only; energy-specific sources will be added as the pilot research continues.
